Dear Justus,
I recently found out that my 15 year old son has been smoking behind our backs. He must be getting them from his friends or school. I was wondering what I can do to teach him that smoking is bad for your health and not acceptable in any circumstance in our home. We have always had a smoke free home. Only my sister smokes in our entire family. I don’t want him to start and I need to do something to get him to stop. I have heard that making them chain smoke an entire pack would work because it makes them sick, is this true?
A Bad Habit

Hello Reinforcer,
Yes, chain smoking could make a beginner sick but here is the problem with that strategy, you don't know how long he's been exercising this bad habit so by making him chain smoke may increase his addiction. Nicotine is highly addictive, many studies suggests more so than cocaine, heroin or any other high power drug. Simply educate him on the matter should help. At 15 he is still relatively easy to scare. Show him some examples of some extreme cases that resulted from smoking. Please be careful to also mention some of the side effects such as impotence, stunt growth, early hair lose, asthma, etc. Kids his age think hard about losing certain abilities at a young age. Peer pressure is heavy at this age also, so confrontation is important.

Hi JustUs,
Just as you said, so does my husband. So of course after breaking the news he went directly to him and confronted him. My husband can be somewhat harsh at times but our son says he's not into it seriously and agrees to stop. My prayer is that he means it and this is not an ongoing problem. Thank you.
