Hi Justus,
I need some advice on how to instill basic responsibility in my 14 year old son. I love my son but he does not seem to have a care in the world and is haphazard with personal property, and I just don't know how to make him understand responsibility. For example, he loves football so his room is filled with all sorts of football paraphernalia. He isn't athletic so he doesn't play but he takes time to watch almost every game and loves the sports channels. Everything he does, he doesn't clean up after himself. He leaves his game cards, uneaten foods, etc. wherever. He leaves the tv on, doors unlocked or opened and worse, he continually loses or breaks things.
Recently he bought an iPad with his birthday money (half coming from me) and wanted it to play games on, check on his sports teams and music. We agreed to the terms of its use and that if he lost it he doesn't get a replacement. Not even 2 months go by and he takes it outside, drops it and cracks the whole screen. He was upset for about an hour and now leaves it lying around anywhere and now wanting the new galaxy phone, which has all the same features plus more. He has shown absolutely no remorse. These are just two of many examples. This really bothers me even more because recently my family was over at my in-laws' house and I overheard my brother- in-law telling his 15 year old son to be careful with his things because (my son) breaks everything and is careless. That hurts to hear and I realize that. We don't spoil him or scold him immeasurably I just need him to do better. He is a smart kid Justus and gets along with almost anyone. He's just so darn irresponsible. Helpful suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.
